My journey to become a naturopathic doctor began after reading the following passage from a complementary and alternative medicine book:

“In ancient and indigenous healing systems, medicine was not about the putting of things into the body but using external resources to help stimulate the internal resources of the body. The body heals itself and maintains it’s own health.”

I was nearing the end of my undergraduate degree in Biology and I knew the linear path I was on to become a medical doctor was about to take a turn. Rather than medical school, I enrolled in a postgraduate degree in Holistic Science where I was immersed in traditional and Indigenous knowledge systems, complexity theory and systems thinking, and the practice of intuition, spirit-dialogue and art-making as guides for scientific inquiry.

Upon graduating, I was called to put this knowledge into practice as a holistic medical professional who honoured the wholeness and sacredness of healing, the power of plants and creativity in healing, and the recognition of one’s innate resources to heal themselves. This lead me to the study and practice of naturopathic medicine.

Kelsey was born and raised in Ottawa and has always had an interest for the anatomy and mechanics of the human body. She knew from a young age that she was passionate about helping people and wanted to pursue a career in manual therapy.

After completing high school, Kelsey went on to pursue her undergraduate degree in Kinesiology at Trent University and Ontario Tech. Kelsey graduated with a Bachelor of Health Sciences in Kinesiology with distinct honours. She gained an extensive knowledge in human anatomy, exercise physiology, and injury management and prevention.

Within a short time after she began working within the field of Kinesiology, Kelsey knew that she was eager to discover more about the human body and was interested in being able to determine the root cause of the dysfunctions that she was seeing in clients day to day. This is when she discovered osteopathy. Osteopathy is based on the principles that the body is a dynamic unit of function and that structure and function are interrelated. This sparked an interest in Kelsey as she enrolled in the Canadian Academy of Osteopathy in Hamilton, Ont.

At the Canadian Academy of Osteopathy, Kelsey studied and practiced classical osteopathy and applied anatomy for 4 years. Over these years, Kelsey developed a strong understanding of the principles of osteopathy in which she is able to demonstrate on the table. This extensive program trained Kelsey to be able to assess the compensatory pattern of the body to be able to determine the root cause of the pain that her patients are experiencing.

When Kelsey is not studying or working, she enjoys walking outdoors with her dog Mack, reading and spending time with family and friends.
